Despite a lot of cancellations of different DC projects, The Batman director Matt Reeves has just confirmed the Batman sequel is in the works. Reeves also confirmed Pattinson’s return to the Batman film’s sequel following a successful portrayal of the flawed superhero.
What Did Exactly Matt Reeves Tell About Batman 2?
In an interview with ComicBook.com‘s Chris Killian, Reeves was asked about any upcoming film from his side. He spoke: “I’m not going to answer that question, but we are working on a movie. I’ll put it to you that way.”
But in the latter part of the interview, he disclosed: “We’re deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson and I are writing, and it’s really exciting, and I’m really excited about what we’re doing.”
Reeves also confirmed Robert Pattinson’s return as he said: “I’m really excited to be doing that with Rob. I just think he’s such a special person and actor”.
There were a lot o rumors going on about Matt Reeves’s Batman’s inclusion in the new DCU of James Gunn and Peter Safran. But Gunn later denied that rumor and supported Pattinson’s Batman solo journey with ground-level thugs in Gotham.
Batman Not Being a Part of Gunn’s DCU
Under previous bosses, The Batman was set to be part of Snyder’s DCU continuity. After Matt Reeves took over the role, he created a different universe of Batman and his villain. This universe will put more focus on Batman and his solo journey.
In a previous interview, Pattinson gave his clear view of how awkward it would be a part of DCU. The actor spoke: “We’ve been talking about how to get the fantastical elements because [director and co-writer Matt Reeves’] world, his take on it is so grounded, and I’m thinking like, ‘How can you add…?’ Like, we were talking the other day, like, ‘Can you add Superman into it but he just doesn’t have any powers? He’s just a guy in a cape?’ He’s just like, ‘I’m Superman!’ And they’re like, ‘So?’”
The Spin-off Series of the Batman Is in Development
Despite the news of Batman 2 is in development, a spinoff of Batman is in the works. An HBO Max series on Colin Farrell’s Penguin is also in the pipeline. Several reports of casting are coming from Hollywood already. This series will serve more as an origin story of Penguin. Laurent Lefranc is the show’s head writer. Reeves himself and Dylan Clark are in this project as producers of the series.
There is also an untitled series in development that will put focus on the notorious Arkham Asylum and its criminals. All these projects are clearly indicating that Matt Reeves is creating his own Batman universe. Eventually, other Bat Family members will join Bruce Wayne when the time comes.
This does not mean Gunn and Safran will not put Batman in their campy version of DCU. Gunn and Safran made a joint statement by saying: “Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
Batman has always been a big name in the case of Box Office numbers. Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy just took it to a new height. On the other hand, Reeves approached the caped crusader in a different manner. After many DC movies got canceled, fans were wondering if Reeves’ Batman sequel would survive this. The words from Matt Reeves himself have given a sigh of relief to the fans.
