Interfaith Celebrity Couples Who Celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah

The O.C.’s Seth Cohen may have introduced the world to “Chrismukkah,” but the tradition lives on! In fact, several celebrity couples celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah during the holiday season.

Mila Kunisfor instance, was raised Jewish, while Ashton Kutcher was raised Christian. The actress opened up in October 2017 about how she began observing Christmas despite her faith.

“I come from communist Russia, where you’re not allowed to be happy, so my holiday traditions are to ‘be quiet,’” Kunis told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “Coming to America is when you realize Christmas has a magical quality to it. In Russia, back in the day, it was a very religious holiday, so you don’t celebrate Christmas if you’re not Christian and if you’re not at Mass. So I, being Jewish, was like, ‘Christmas is not for you.’”

However, the Bad Moms star changed her mind. “We come to America and we’re like, ‘Christmas is so inclusive,’” she remembered. “We literally bought a Christmas tree. So as far as tradition goes, my family’s big on any excuse to get the family together and get drunk.”

Kunis did not adopt one Christmas custom when she began celebrating with her children, Wyatt and Dimitri, though. “So far, our tradition is no presents for the kids,” she explained. “We’re instituting it this year because when the kids are [younger than] 1, it doesn’t really matter. Last year when we celebrated Christmas, Wyatt was 2 and it was too much. We didn’t give her anything — it was the grandparents. The kid no longer appreciates the one gift. They don’t even know what they’re expecting; they’re just expecting stuff.”

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall actress and Kutcher tried to appeal to the grandparents. “We’ve told our parents, ‘We’re begging you — if you have to give her something, pick one gift. Otherwise, we’d like to take a charitable donation, to the Children’s Hospital or a pet [or] whatever you want,’” she said.

Meanwhile, Dan Levi grew up ringing in both holidays with his parents, Eugene Levy and Deborah Divine. “One half of me is celebrating Hanukkah, the other half is decorating a tree,” the Happiest Season actor tweeted in December 2012. “My body is confused. #halfie #chrismukkah.”

Raven Gates and Adam Gottschalk

The Bachelor Nation couple made new traditions after they tied the knot in April 2021. Gates has always celebrated Christmas while Gottschalk honors Hanukkah.

During an Instagram Q&A in December 2022, the former Bachelor contestant opened up about the judgments she and her husband face being a couple who practice different religions.

“As many of you know we are interfaith. I have stopped sharing some of the things we do to celebrate both because I’ve had too many antisemitic and anti-Christian comments & real world experiences,” she said in a response about which holidays the pair celebrate. “Our common core values bring us together & the world sometimes wants them to separate us.”

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis

The That ‘70s Show costars made new traditions together after tying the knot in July 2015. Kutcher has always celebrated Christmas, while Kunis began appreciating the perks of the holiday following her move to the U.S. from Soviet Ukraine.

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky

Clinton and Mezvinsky are Methodist and Jewish, respectively. The She Persisted author, who did not convert to Judaism, tweeted in December 2017 that she was “on my way home to light candles with my family.” The couple wed in July 2010 and are parents of Charlotte, Aidan and Jasper.

Eugene Levy and Deborah Divine

The actor is Jewish, while Divine is Christian. They married in 1977 and are parents of Dan and Sarah. Eugene’s situation in real life mirrored his fictional one when he and Catherine O’Hara showed their Schitt’s Creek characters, Johnny and Moira Rose, having an interfaith celebration in a 2018 episode.

Pink and Carey Hart

The singer is Jewish; Hart is Christian. As such, Pink has shown her kids, Willow and Jameson, posing in front of a Christmas tree and lighting a menorah. The Grammy winner wed the former motocross star in January 2006.

Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas

Goodwin revealed in 2013 that she reconnected with her Jewish faith, but she and Dallas still enjoy the Christmas season. The Once Upon a Time costars wed in April 2014, and the two later welcomed sons Oliver and Hugo.
