On Thursday, Kenta Nishimoto stunned fifth-seed Jonatan Christie enroute to a comfortable straight-set victory by score of 21-15, 21-17. Meanwhile, fellow Japanese shuttler Kanta Tsuneyama managed to secure an unexpected victory against fourth-seed Chou Tien-chen and qualify for the quarterfinal.

In the highlight clash of the day, India’s sole men’s singles survivor HS Prannoy defeated Dwi Wardoyo after an intense contest that lasted full three sets. With his victory, Prannoy has qualified for the quarter and is scheduled to face unseeded Kodai Naraoka. All contestants will be looking to start off strong by winning the renowned BWF Super 1000 tournament because this event will serve as the launch of the 2023 BWF World Tour. Each category champion at the 2023 Malaysia Open will receive 12,000 BWF points, providing them an edge on the 2023 BWF World Tour. Following their second-round exit, Jonatan Christie and Chou Tien-chen will only receive 4,800 BWF points, preventing them from moving up much in the BWF World Rankings.
