One of the most iconic songs of the 2000s, Hollaback Girl, is actually a diss track aimed at ’90s rocker, Courtney Love.
Gwen Stefani wrote the song after Love gave an interview in which she shaded the No Doubt singer.
“Being famous is just like being in high school. But I’m not interested in being the cheerleader. I’m not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She’s the cheerleader, and I’m out in the smoker shed. And plenty of you are out there in the smoker shed too. When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll, it’s just like high school.”
In response to this, Stefani wrote Hollaback Girl and the music video centres around the theme of cheerleaders.
“Y’know someone one time called me a cheerleader, negatively, and I’ve never been a cheerleader,” Stefani told music publication NME in 2005.
“So I was, like, ‘OK, f-ck you. You want me to be a cheerleader? Well, I will be one then. And I’ll rule the whole world, just you watch me.'”
