The Los Angeles Police Department reports that a 31-year-old father and English teacher Keenan Anderson died last week from cardiac arrest after being tased many times with his full video viral
This is the third death in Los Angeles that involved a police officer. According to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department last week, on January 3 officers came upon Keenan Anderson, the cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, near the scene of a car accident in the Venice district.
Body camera footage shows officers repeatedly tazing Anderson as they tried to place him under custody. Anderson allegedly went into cardiac arrest after his arrest and was confirmed dead at a local hospital.

Keenan Anderson taught English to 10th graders at Digital Pioneers Academy in Washington, DC. Ashton added that Anderson had spent the holiday with relatives in Los Angeles.
Police noted in the video that the department’s protocol considers the death of anyone in police custody to be a “categorical” use of force, and that detectives from the Force Investigation Division responded to the site where Anderson was taken into custody to investigate the use of force.
Los Angeles police have released footage of the investigations into the shooting deaths of 45-year-old Takar Smith and 35-year-old Oscar Sanchez.
What exactly happened in the video with Keenan Anderson?
Officers reported seeing Anderson “running in the middle of the street and exhibiting erratic behavior.” On one officer’s body-worn camera, released and edited by police, a woman at the traffic collision site tells police, “I think that guy up there needs help though, because the guy’s trying to run away.”
An officer’s body camera footage shows Anderson stopping and talking to them before cutting to a text screen that reads “attempted to get away.”
Keenan Anderson found jogging in the street
The video picks up with Anderson jogging into the street, followed by the officer who eventually catches up to him at a major junction and orders him to get on the ground face down.
When Anderson doesn’t cooperate right away, two more cops show up and lay him out on his stomach on the sidewalk, urging him to “relax.” Anderson can be heard pleading with the officers not to murder him as they struggle on top of him: “Help, they’re trying to kill me.”
An officer can be heard telling Anderson to cease resisting and turn over multiple times, and making various threats to tase Anderson, on footage from another responding police.
Anderson explains to the officers, “They’re trying to George Floyd me,” as they attempt to shift him onto his stomach. After saying, “I’m not resisting,” Anderson is shocked multiple times with a taser by an officer. The footage then shows police officers cuffing Anderson and placing ankle hobbles on him.
Keenan Anderson received medical attention
Eventually, the Los Angeles Fire Department loads Anderson, who seems to be awake at this point, onto a gurney next to an ambulance. According to the police department’s press release, Anderson received medical attention from responding firefighters before being taken to a nearby hospital.
“While at the hospital, Anderson went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased,” the release says. According to LAPD Capt. Kelly Muiz in the video, it took around 4.5 hours for Anderson to die after officers used deadly force.
Anderson’s blood samples showed positive in a preliminary toxicology-blood check for cocaine and marijuana, according to police; furthermore, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office is likely to run their own independent toxicology testing.
