I first got in touch with Dean in the 1990s to talk about his late 1960s work with Roy Orbison’s backing band “The Candymen” and Dennis Yosts’ “Classics IV,” even though Dean is best known for his iconic keyboard stylings with the Atlanta Rhythm Section. In chart-topping hits spanning several decades, he was the man behind many iconic keyboard parts.
The last member of the original and best ARS lineup, Dean Daughtry, passed away today, wrote Dennis Welch, another Daughtry fan. He was the only member who remained the same until 2020, when he retired. He was from Kinston, Alabama. The band I have seen the most, more than likely 20 times, is ARS, one of the most talented ever in terms of playing and writing. Have everything they’ve made available.
